Greetings,
"Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Matthew 17:21
A Call to Prayer and Fasting for Revival and Awakening
What if the fate of our nation, our families, and our churches depended on our willingness to humble ourselves in prayer and fasting? Would we be willing to sacrifice?
The time for passive faith is over. The time for action is now.
We called SBC churches and pastors to set aside February 23, 2025, as a day of prayer for SBC Life. We held a live stream day of prayer on Feb. 22. Encouraging that we would unite in seeking the Lord’s presence and power in our churches, our communities, and our nation through SBC life. It is a time to be intentional about coming before the Lord, interceding for spiritual renewal and revival.
Many spiritual disciplines are languishing among SBC Life. We are always grateful for those who have remained faithful in prayer and fasting for years—God bless them! But they are only a remnant. Prayer is not just a routine activity; it is a call to warfare. Fasting is another discipline that has largely been forgotten in the modern church. Yet Jesus Himself said, “This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting.” If we desire a true move of God, we must return to these disciplines.
The Need is Urgent
We are in the season of Lent. By and large, SBC churches and members do not fast or participate in Lent. However, for some, it is a time of preparation—a period of 40 days set apart to focus on the Lord. While Lent itself is not in Scripture, the principle of denying oneself in order to walk in deeper obedience to Christ is thoroughly biblical.
Scripture repeatedly highlights the power of 40 days—in Christ’s life and in the lives of saints before us. The question is: Are we willing to deny ourselves so that we may draw near to Him?
Across college campuses, there is a movement of the Spirit. Over the last 18 months, SBC churches have reported an increase in baptisms—this is the work of God! However, at the same time, church attendance has declined. Reports indicate that only 15% of the U.S. population (out of 330 million people) is faithfully attending church, leaving 85% outside the body of Christ, disobedient to the call to "forsake not the assembling of yourselves together." The lostness of souls is even greater.
We talk about prayer. We pray. But where is the deep, desperate prayer that shakes heaven and moves the hand of God? Where is the prayer with fasting that brings true revival? If we truly believe that only God can heal our land, we must show it with our actions.
What is at Stake?
We cannot ignore the signs of the times. Look around you.
- Families are being torn apart by addiction.
- Children are being exploited, neglected, and abandoned.
- Homicides, suicides, and murder-suicides are at epidemic levels.
- The LGBTQ agenda is influencing the minds and hearts of thousands.
- Diseases, economic instability, and spiritual decay have taken hold of our nation.
Twenty-five years ago, these things were rare. Now, they are at epidemic levels. What changed? The spiritual fabric of our nation is unraveling, and we are witnessing God’s judgment unfold before our eyes.
There is only one solution—Christ Jesus. But revival will not come unless we seek Him with everything we have.
The Call to Action: We Must Seek the Lord
Throughout history, revival has always begun with a small, faithful remnant willing to pray and fast. The Great Awakening, the Welsh Revival, and even the early church were all birthed from a hunger for God’s presence.
Imagine what could happen if the SBC united in prayer and fasting.
- Churches filled again.
- Families restored.
- Millions turning back to Christ.
This is not wishful thinking—it is possible, if we are willing to seek Him.
We Are Setting Aside the First Thursday of Each Month
Time is short. Final judgment is coming. Will we be found faithful?
We are setting aside the first Thursday of each month for prayer and fasting. Local pastors and churches are committing to fast each Thursday. In Georgia, an association of pastors fasts on the first Friday of each month. This is the kind of movement we need across SBC Life.
The specific day matters less than the fact that it is being done. God blesses unity among His people.
Will you join us?
How to Participate:
WHAT: Prayer & Fasting
WHEN: The 1st Thursday of each month
HOW:
- Set aside specific times for prayer alone with God.
- Set aside times for prayer with other believers.
- Fast from food and/or drink for that day.
This is not a request. This is a calling.
If we desire to see revival, we must humble ourselves in prayer and fasting. We cannot wait any longer.
Take Action Now
Will you help us spread this call to prayer and fasting?
We are reaching out across the SBC—each state convention, each association, each SBC entity, and each seminary. But we need your help to spread the word.
Gather your church. Contact your pastors. Call your prayer groups. Let us unite as one body in Christ to seek Him for revival and awakening.
We cannot afford to wait. We cannot afford to be passive. The time is now. Let us rise up as a church united in prayer and fasting, believing that God will hear and answer.
Will you join us?
Until,
Dan Biser
