A DAY OF PRAYER - 2025
Greetings,
"And He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him, and his righteousness, it sustained him." Isaiah 59:16
It is this verse, that God began to speak and lead me in the pursuit of what it meant to be a true intercessor. In recent weeks, God, in His gracious and merciful ways, has gently reminded me of why He birthed in me the desire to be an intercessor—a role, calling, and responsibility I continue to pursue and seek to excel in. I thank God for each step of progress and accomplishment. Yet, I also lament my shortcomings, failures, and sins in not fully living up to what I know He has called me to be. I am grateful that He continues to stir my heart to seek Him and draw closer to Him. I am fully aware, that God does not have to issue me a calling, or leading in intercession or to pray. My desire extends not only for myself but also for my brethren in the SBC and the Church as a whole, that we might become what God needs us to be, especially in such a time as this.
I recently gave a book by Alan Redpath to one of my sons. He apologized for not having read it yet but promised to do so. When I heard the name "Alan Redpath," God spoke to me: "Do you remember that sermon I gave him to preach at the Moody Bible Conference so many decades ago?" "Yes, Lord," I replied, feeling shame and remorse because I knew what He was asking me. That sermon, "God Looks for a Man," was a call to action. God asked me, "Will you be that man? Will you be the one interceding and praying when I look for such a person?" It was a moment of divine calling for me to understand what it means to be an intercessor.
Shortly after that day talking with my son, during my Thursday Hour of Prayer, I encountered a phrase by Andrew Murray in my worship section. As I shared it with those viewing, the Lord spoke to me again: "Do you remember where that quote is from?" "Yes, Lord," I responded. I knew it was from Andrew Murray's book on prayer, specifically the section titled "The Sin of Prayerlessness." It was this section, over 20 years ago, that God used to lead me to establish the Broken Before the Throne prayer conference.
These moments have reminded me once again of the vast importance of prayer and why God placed in me the desire to pray and to grow in prevailing prayer. For over 20 years, I have sought to urge SBC leaders, pastors, and other denominational leaders to set before the body of Christ this calling: "that we would be houses of prayer." Today, I extend another invitation to you to join me in calling for prayer within SBC life. I fully believe that almost all of SBC life understands and would agree in the importance of prayer. But when asked how their prayer life is, the response is generally, "I need to do better at praying and give more time to it." Understanding that none of us has "arrived" in our prayer lives, let us seek to set before them this great invite to be a people of prayer. Let us set aside a day to proclaim the word of the Lord and call ourselves to a greater prayer life for His Kingdom and His Name's sake. Nothing in the Kingdom of God is accomplished without the prayers of His people.
God has also placed upon you a ministry of prayer. Our contacts over the years have often focused on the great need for God's people to pray. These last two years, since the Asbury revival, have witnessed God’s continued grace and mercy poured out in many ways. Yet, we know that every season has a beginning and an end: "There is a time to begin, and there is a time when it ceases." We do not know how much longer this season of grace will last. I believe we could have done more to fan the flames of His Spirit upon this nation and the nations. Therefore, I plead with you to join me in setting before our brethren, a call to prayer. Stressing the importance, priority and necessity that we be houses of prayer and a people of prayer.
Therefore, I invite you to join me on February 22 for a Day of Prayer. I am seeking to gather 6–8 leaders to participate in this day. You are invited to take 45 to 60 minutes to share what the Lord places on your heart regarding revival, the prayer life, and the great need for our churches to pray. It is to be used of the Spirit to speak to His bride about the importance of prayer. Successes, failures, helps, verses, testimonies and leadings of the Spirit to share with others, that may encourage, strengthen and lead us in our prayer closets for His glory. Let us set the word of the Lord before the body so that the Spirit may move powerfully, calling us to be more intentional, obedient, and prayerful.
