PRAYER EMAIL - MAY 20

 Greetings,

"Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord. . . Why do you such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.  . . if a man sin against the Lord, who shall intreat for him?. . . for the iniquity which he knoweth. . . because he restrained them not."  I Samuel 2 & 3

I am in the midst of the "Great Questions of the Bible" and came across these questions and verses earlier this week.  The Lord will not leave me alone with these passages.  Let us note the questions for our application of prayer times and point out the prayer targets for our personal and corporate use.

Question 1 - 'Why do you such things?'  Eli knew, had heard, and been told what his sons had been doing in great sins against the Lord and the people.  This is the reason that I started with the first phrase, 'the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord.'  How much sin is 'very great'?  How much sin takes it from sin to an abomination?  You don't hear much of this teaching or instruction about the weight of sin.  A definition of sin is needful to know how awful it is that, as these boys, who were the priest were doing against the Lord.  Sin is breaking the law, going against His Word and the ways of God.  'Very great sin' is a process of increased repetition and continuing in sin.  In I John we are warned as the church, as Christians, that we will not continue in sin.  I don't know that the church has any grasp of this, as we are so focused on 'rededications'.  As one old preacher said it, 'we have rededicated so many times, we have broke our 'dedicators.'  And if continued in, and left without repentance and conviction, these sins elevate to status of abomination, of which the Lord hates such deeds, choices and resolve of men against Him.  He has warned, He has told them, He has sent remedial judgements; all of no affect or deterrence.  And we are left for our nation, but much more for the state of the church and Christians that are at ease and in direct violation of God's word, will and ways, asking them and ourselves, 'why do you such things?'

Question 2 - 'who shall intreat for him?'   This word of intreat has been constant the last several weeks, in different ways of study and reading and prayer.  It is one of the great studies of the Bible.  Who intreated for you for your salvation?  Who do you intreat for presently?  But here they had sinned directly against the Lord in the role of priests and sinned themselves and caused the people to sin.  They were guilty of stealing and defiling the offerings, committing fornication with the young women, and after reproved by Eli, they refused to humble themselves and change.  They were guilty of rebellion.  It is the sin of our society today of both those old, but mostly the young; they are rebellious against the ways of the Lord.  How shall we intreat the Lord for such things?  A constant cry, as many parents do for their prodigals and rebellious children.  But there must be an intreating of the Lord, so as to prevail for their wretched place before the Lord.  'For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.'

And this leads us to our directives to use in prayer times.  1.  Eli knew about it, but did not restrain it.  This has always been a verse that registered with me.  To know sin, that they/we are doing sin, or that is found in their/our own lives, and do nothing to restrain it, is to find oneself in a hard place before the Lord.   The problem of our current society and especially the church is no restraint of sin.  If anything, the impact upon Eli and his sons and the children of Israel for their refusal to restrain sin, when they knew about sin, is the condemnation that brought their deaths upon them, the loss of the ark and defeat at the hands of their enemies, the Philistines.  Can we not know the certainty of all these things for our present day?  Why would we go to war, when God is not for us?  Why would we allow for our loved ones to continue in sin, and think that they are not one step away from death and dying?  When we know the certainty that sin has consequences.  Our utmost place as prayer warriors is to identify sin, pray against it, speak against it and restrain it.  yet, and I know that this is harsh, the church and Christians seem so bent on compromise, complacency, and at ease with such iniquity.

Conclusion.  Let this be set before us, that such things would not be named among us.  Praying for that which is the priority of the Lord, would be ours and His church prayer and pursuit - 'be ye holy, for I am holy.'  For if one is seeking the holiness of the Lord, these things will not be found to be restrained.  A Christian hates sin, for they know what it costs the Lord on Calvary, it knows what is has costs us as a nation, the state of the church and our own family and individual lives.  Sin costs!  And this evil as it continues to grow, increases and deepen in the roots and foundations, is fulfilling Romans 1, where God finally, 'turns us over to reprobate minds.'  We already see this unfolding and coming to pass.  Why?  No restraint by the church.  For, as the church goes, so goes the nation.  You and I are called to know sin.  We are to know what displeases the Lord; what the Lord hates; and what is contrary to God's will and ways.  When we see so much against Him, the heart, mind and soul is in anguish for where we are.

He is the great Deliverer from sin, from bondage, from captivity.  Yet, so many that profess themselves Christian, are still snared and bound.  What was they set free from?  Oh, for the power of His resurrection to work wondrously to purge, deliver and make us holy as He is holy.  Lord, save to and from the uttermost for Your glory.  Yes, we are called to intreat the Lord for them.  To intreat Him for the land, for the nation, for our future, for our families, for His bride, for each other, and for ourselves that we would be saved from sin.  'now unto Him, Who is able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before Him.'  Answer the questions posed here; and pray the directives given.  Much to bring before the Lord, isn't there?  Brethren, pray and intreat the Lord, while there is still time.  Soon enough the Lord will speak and declare, 'Pray not for this people any more.'  But until then, pray!

'The hour is late, the need is great; pray so as to prevail.'
